Kim's Talk Strength in the Savior

After being in Japan for not quite 2 weeks, I was playing soccer at the Weasels’ Den.  I was having a great time and so excited at the opportunity to be able to play soccer again so frequently.  Then I fell. I fell hard and I ended up with a broken elbow.

After one week in a sling, the doctor told me I needed to start using my arm or else I would not be able to use my elbow to its fullest in the future.  I went home worried about the pain.  I have to admit I was a little disappointed that I wasn’t going to have any real outward evidence to show my current handicap.  I was in a lot of pain.  But I started using the arm.  At first only able to do little things like holding an object while my left hand did the work necessary to open, pour, cut, etc.  Washing my hair was a huge ordeal.  And there were many things I simply could not do.  I had to rely on others a lot.  But slowly, I noticed some things were beginning to get easier.  About 6 weeks after my injury I started an intensive physical therapy program.  I went in to work with the technicians twice a week and did my exercises at home each day.  The exercises included things that were previously ridiculously easy, bicep curls with my fingers pointed up, and then with my thumb pointed up, rotating my hand from a palm up position to a palm down position and squeezing some red puddy repeatedly.  My sessions in physical therapy and my work at home was hard.  At first some of those simple things would bring me to tears.  But after consistently working for four months on strengthening my joint and the muscles surrounding it I can bend my elbow, I can hyperextend my arm, and just this week I graduated from physical therapy!

My arm is nowhere near as strong as I want it to be, so I still have a lot of work to do.  But because of the expertise of the physical therapist and his techs I was able to consistently strengthen my arm to the point that it will be functional for the rest of my life.

Just as physical therapy was essential to my developing physical strength in my arm, so too is spiritual therapy essential to developing spiritual strength through our Saviour.  In a talk given by Sister Chieko Okazaki in 1993 she says, “All of us face different…situations.  All of us need strength in dealing with them.  This strength comes from faith in the Savior’s love and in the power of his atonement…All problems are manageable with that strength, and all other problems are secondary in urgency to maintaining a strong spiritual life.”

Sister Okazaki asked the question, “How can we build this kind of faith in the strength of the Savior?”  Then quoting David, she counsels us to “Seek the Lord and his strength…continually” (1 Chronicles 16:11).  Just like my physical therapy, spiritual therapy needs to be done consistently and continually.

In our most recent General Conference President Monson only spoke briefly, but his words were or profound importance, he said, “It is not enough…merely to believe in Him and His mission.  We need to work and learn, search and pray, repent and improve.  We need to know God’s laws and live them.  We need to receive his saving ordinances.  Only by so doing will we obtain true eternal happiness.”

I propose to you that the spiritual therapy that is prescribed for us to be able to reach our full potential is to “work and learn, search and pray, repent and improve.”

Let’s start with the first exercises: work and learn.  Elder Kazuhiko Yamashita in the most recent General Conference talked about work when he said, “What does it mean to be ambitious for Christ?  It means being motivated, focused, and dedicated to His work.”  He further describes it that it will “seldom mean that we are singled out for public honor. {It} means that we serve faithfully and diligently in our wards and branches without complaint and with joyful hearts.”

Our callings take work.  Not all of that work is fun and/or rewarding.  But doing that work without complaint and with joyful hearts will build up our strength in the Saviour.  I have had a real blessing to work in just about every type of calling possible in the church.  I’ve served in many callings in primary, young women’s, and relief society.  Unfortunately, I haven’t always served without complaint and with a joyful heart and I can testify that when I have made that commitment to work my faith and testimony was strengthened.

Another word for work is service.  Sister Okazaki tells us that as we serve in faith “we will have the sensitivity to serve compassionately.  We will have the wisdom that we need for our church callings…We will hold a clear vision of gospel ideals and aspire toward them even as we deal patiently with the limitations of reality.  Through faith in the Savior, we can magnify our opportunities, cope with our problems, and keep both of them in perspective.” There will always be limitations to what we can do on our own.  Just as my elbow could only bend so much early on, as I focused my work on the potential and kept a perspective on the big picture I was able to work through the pain and get to a point of mobility.  The service we can render to others sometimes feels limited by our own abilities or time.  As a mother to a large and young family I have often struggled with feeling like the Lord was disappointed with my lack of service to others.  I’ve been thankful for good leaders and friends who have helped me to see from a different perspective that I am serving in my family every day.  Elder Robert D. Hales said, “Some of our most impactful Christian service is given by holding family scripture study, family prayer, and family council meetings.”

The second set of exercises in our spiritual therapy are search and pray.  There are so many things that could be said about the importance of these exercises!  My own personal experience with study and prayer has been a long time in the making.  I began an earnest study of the scriptures in my youth.  I remember the first time I read through the entire Book of Mormon.  It was exhilarating to finish and take Moroni’s promise to heart.  I prayed to know if it was truly the word of God and felt good and happy.  I felt peace.  I have felt similar feelings every time I’ve read it since.  I have a testimony that the these words spoken by Pres. Ezra Taft Benson are true concerning the Book of Mormon.  He said, “It is not just that the Book of Mormon teaches us truth, though it indeed does that. It is not just that the Book of Mormon bears testimony of Christ, though it indeed does that, too. But there is something more. There is a power in the book which will begin to flow into your lives the moment you begin a serious study of the book. You will find greater power to resist temptation. You will find the power to avoid deception. You will find the power to stay on the strait and narrow path.”  The Book of Mormon has helped me at times that would seem trivial to many others, but because it helped me I began to realise that God is aware of me, He loves me.  My spiritual therapy was rewarded with strength in the Savior.

Looking at words directly from our Saviour, he has said, “Search the scriptures…they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39). “Study my word which hath gone forth among the children of men” (D&C 11:22).  “I say unto you that you shall let your time be devoted to the studying of the scriptures” (D&C 26:1).  And, “seek learning, even by study and also by faith” (D&C 88:118).  We have to read the scriptures and really try to understand their significance to us.    The Lord wants us to study his written word in the scriptures as well as the spoken words of our latter-day prophets.  Then he wants us to “seek learning… by faith” by acting on the things we have learned.  That is how we really develop those spiritual muscles we’re aiming for!

From the church’s website we read, “The gospel of Jesus Christ is rich enough to challenge and inspire the brightest mind, yet simple enough to be understood by a child…In our search for truth, we read, ponder, and analyse information and weigh its reliability…We are discerning and careful, always remembering that our knowledge is incomplete but growing.  We continually seek the Spirit and hold to our faith.”

We can’t just expect to know if something is truth.  We have to act on the truth we’ve received and as we do, our faith will grow line upon line and precept upon precept.  But we must also turn to the source of the truth, our Father in Heaven, in prayer.

“Prayer is essential to developing faith” (Sister Carole N. McConkie, Oct. 2016) “When we pray with faith, the Holy Ghost can guide our thoughts so that our words harmonise with the will of God.”  Sister Okazaki informs us that, “if we have faith, we will desire to pray often and sincerely, and his Spirit will teach us what to pray for (see Rom. 8:26-27).”

Think about how many talks and scriptures we’ve heard about prayer over the years.  It is that important for us to remember.  Just in this most recent conference alone prayer was mentioned 77 times!

In Helaman 3:35 we read a great testimonial for following this counsel, the people “did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ.”  I love the seeming juxtaposition of the phrase “stronger in their humility.”  I think humility is key to being successful with all these exercises for developing  strength in the Savior.

If we really, truly want to strengthen of our spiritual muscles, we have to make time consistently for study and prayer.

The final exercise that our spiritual therapist instructs us in is to repent and improve. In one of my favorite talks in October’s conference Elder J. Devn Comish said, “‘Really trying’ means doing the best we can, recognising where we need to improve, and then trying again.  By repeatedly doing this, we come closer and closer to the Lord, we feel His Spirit more and more, and we receive more of His grace, or help.” He continues, “If we will sincerely repent, God really will forgive us, even when we have committed the same sin over and over again.”  Elder Comish testifies that if we will ask Heavenly Father what he thinks of us, sincerely, “{Heavenly Father} will love and correct, but never discourage us; that is Satan’s trick.” Satan knows that this exercise is an especially difficult one for us to master, to improve.  To improve implies that we are never really “good enough” which without our Saviour we never will be.  Satan chooses to really drive that discouragement into our hearts, but to improve we must ignore his trick and cling to our faith in Christ.

Elder Christofferson also talks about repenting and improving.  He tells us that we need to “submit fully to {God’s} will.”  We need to “accept His correction when needed, ‘for whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth.”  That pretty well covers the repent aspect of the exercise.  And for the improve portion, he continues, that we should, “love and serve one another as Jesus has loved and served us.”  I can think of no better way to improve myself than to fill my life with Christlike service and my heart with Christlike love.

Brothers and Sister, physical therapy was never easy.  The physical therapist didn’t prescribe the exercises to be easy or to benefit himself, nor did he give me exercises that were random.  Each was carefully chosen to best help me become stronger.  I had to trust that he knew more than I did about how to best treat my injury. And sometimes it hurt.  Having to arrange my schedule to get a babysitter and get to appointments, was a pain in a different way.  But all the physical pain and all the stress were worth it to help me strengthen my arm.

These spiritual therapy exercises aren’t always going to be easy, either.  Arranging our schedules to make them a priority can be daunting at times. We may even experience pain as we go through them.  But I promise you the “spiritual therapist” has carefully chosen exercises that will strengthen each of us in the Savior!  We have to trust that our Father in Heaven knows more about how to best strengthen our faith than we do.  As we trust him and do these exercises, we will be blessed just like the Nephites in the book of Helaman who did “wax stronger and stronger in their humility and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ.”  In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Something to Share

So I gave a talk in Sacrament a couple months ago, and it was an awesome experience.  I really wished that I could have had y'all with me, because the Spirit felt was so good.  That started me thinking about how much I would love to be with you anytime y'all are speaking as well, but I know that can't always happen.  So I decided that I am sharing my talk here, and I would love it if you would take a few minutes to read it, and perhaps this could be something that starts some conversations.  If nothing else I would love for anyone, when giving a talk, to post it here as well for the rest of us that aren't able to be with you in person.  So without further adieu:

The Power of the Word of God

Most of us in here know each other.  My family has been in the Ward for a little over 4 years now, but with all the changes, and new faces, I feel I should introduce myself.  Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya…   (Pause for roaring laughter)…. I’m Dave Holliday.  I have the most amazing wife in the world.  Adrienne makes me smile every day.  I can call her, and I still get butterflies when I hear her voicemail, “I’m sorry, the person you have dialed is no longer accepting calls from this number.”  (More roaring laughter)  We have 5 awesome children, but only three are with me today.  You may have seen Adrienne run out the door with our youngest during the sacrament, and our oldest in Utah with family.

The topic the Bishopric assigned me is “The Power of the Word of God,” so I’m going to spend some time talking about the importance of devouring daily the deluge of deliberately dictated, delectable doctrines donning the pages of the scriptures.

I had to do that for my wife, even though she didn’t get to enjoy it.
What is the Word of God?  And just how powerful is it?

The scriptures contain the Word of God.

The words of prophets, both ancient as well as modern day, and even those guiding Christ’s church today, are the Word of God.

The testimony of the righteous is the Word of God.
The Savior is the Word of God.

Jacob Chapter 4 Verse 6 sheds some light on what the Power of the Word can do or become within us.

6 Wherefore, we search the prophets, and we have many revelations and the spirit of prophecy; and having all these witnesses we obtain a hope, and our faith becometh unshaken, insomuch that we truly can command in the name of Jesus and the very trees obey us, or the mountains, or the waves of the sea.

The Word of God is a conduit.  It is the tool by which the heavens are opened, and the Lord communicates with men.  There is nothing greater.  How often are prayers answered, not while kneeling in supplication, but while sitting with the scriptures open?

In October 2011 Richard G Scott shared, and I quote,

“Pondering a passage of scripture can be a key to unlock revelation and the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Ghost. Scriptures can calm an agitated soul, giving peace, hope, and a restoration of confidence in one’s ability to overcome the challenges of life. They have potent power to heal emotional challenges when there is faith in the Savior. They can accelerate physical healing.”

This power Elder Scott spoke of is real.  Are we using that conduit adequately?  Do we realize this availability on a daily basis?  If that answer is no, then why not?

Now I want to focus on a different way the Power of the Word can help.

Throughout history wars have been fought over behavior, and attitudes held by some people, and disapproved of by others.  Those wars have always failed to change those attitudes and behaviors.
We’ve all heard stories about people coming into vast amounts of money, through different means, but the one thing they have in common is that they almost inevitably maintain the same patterns of thought, attitudes, and behaviors with their newfound wealth, and as a result, often, it doesn’t last them very long.

Fear has been a failed motivator.  Money hasn’t been powerful enough.  Even the love of a spouse, children, and other cherished people has come up short time and time again.

The way we perceive life, our circumstances, and the way we react to them, our thoughts, attitudes, behaviors, and our very selfish nature are some of the most difficult things to change, mold, or develop, but they are the most important.

In Mosiah 3:19 King Benjamin taught it very eloquently:

19 For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.

It is imperative we escape the natural tendencies of our mortal form, but therein lies the most difficult part of this human experience.

Is there anything powerful enough to truly change our natural attitudes, and behavior?

President David O. McKay taught  “The purpose of the gospel is . . . to make bad men good and good men better, and to change human nature”  (from the film Every Member a Missionary, as acknowledged by Franklin D. Richards, CR, October 1965, 136–37)

In a talk given in 2001 Elder David A Bednar referred to President McKay, and said “thus the journey of a lifetime is to progress from bad to good to better and to experience the mighty change of heart—and to have our fallen natures changed.”

Elder Bednar continued by saying he believed President McKay was suggesting that the journey from bad to good is the process of putting off the natural man or the natural woman in each of us.
President Boyd K. Packer stated: Quote:

“True doctrine, understood, changes attitudes and behavior.
The study of the doctrines of the gospel will improve behavior quicker than a study of behavior will improve behavior. . . . That is why we stress so forcefully the study of the doctrines of the gospel”. [“Little Children,” Ensign, November 1986, 17]

End Quote.
We see evidence of this in Alma Chapter 31 Verse 5,
5 And now, as the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just—yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them.
The power of the word of God is evident all around.  While teaching Seminary Brother Todd B Parker wanted to show the youth the power of the Word.

He taught that the first principle in putting off the natural man is to draw upon the Power of the Word daily.

The first day of school he asked each of his students to write on a piece of paper.  He said, “Be honest in your writing here. I’m not going to look at this. This is for you only. Write down your honest feelings about religion—about God, Christ, Joseph Smith…, the Church, or anything you want. Fold it .., staple it, and put your name and date on the outside.”

Over the course of the year they studied the scriptures together every day, marking, and making notes as they went along.  But that wasn’t all, and I quote “The students were challenged to pray every day, morning and night, on their knees, out loud, and read a chapter of scripture each day on their own for nine months.”

On the last day of class he asked the students to write again, not reminding them of the first day, he said, “Now don’t try to impress anybody here. Just be honest. Write your feelings about God, the Church, Christ, the gospel, or anything you’d like.”

When they finished, he returned to each student his or her paper from earlier in the year so they could compare them.  He didn’t plan to read any of them, but 2 students came to him.
Julie with tears in her eyes, and these are the words she had written:

“I guess I sometimes wonder if Christ really does live. I don’t know for sure, and I have always wondered since I was old enough to even think about it. . . . I also wonder if this is the true church or not. Everything we are told to do seems right, but I still have doubts.”

After nine months of studying the scriptures in seminary, she wrote, in part:

“I know God lives and His Son, Jesus Christ, is my Brother and He knows me and He cares about me. Through prayer I know He will guide us and show us the right way through His prophets, who I know are called of God. I know He loves each of us in a very special way.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true church, and I know it without a doubt. It was restored by Joseph Smith, who I know was a true prophet.”

Brother Parker pointed out Julie used the words “I know.” 9 times.

That was the power of the word in this young woman’s life.

Larry also shared his words:

“I don’t really know there’s a God. I only go to church to make my mom and dad happy. I wish I had a testimony, but I don’t. Sometimes I feel like I have an important job on earth, but I don’t know what it is. I’m always wanting to do something wrong.”

Nine months later this young man wrote:

“I know the Church is true. I have a testimony of it. I love my Big Brother and my Heavenly Father, and I know They live. I know Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, and I have a testimony of it.

I love this church with all my life. Some say they do not know if they would give their life for it, but I know—if need be, and my Father willed it—I would.”

That was the power of the word in this young man’s life.

In October of 2004 Elder David A Bednar remembered listening to the testimony of President Harold B. Lee, and said, “I hope I shall never forget what I felt and heard and learned that day. His teachings have positively influenced me for the last 28 years.”

The word of God has positively influenced his life for the past 28 years, and I would bet is still influencing him today, more than ten years later.

That was the power of the word in Elder Bednar’s life.

In the temple yesterday while waiting for my wife to finish changing, I felt impressed to read in 2 Nephi chapter 32.  I didn’t get very far, because what the Lord had for me was in the first few verses:

1 And now, behold, my beloved brethren, I suppose that ye ponder somewhat in your hearts concerning that which ye should do after ye have entered in by the way. But, behold, why do ye ponder these things in your hearts?

2 Do ye not remember that I said unto you that after ye had received the Holy Ghost ye could speak with the tongue of angels? And now, how could ye speak with the tongue of angels save it were by the Holy Ghost?

3 Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.

My oldest son, Dalton has been away in Utah for most of the summer.  While at a church camp for 16-18 year old boys, called Sons of Helaman, he had a great experience in the testimony meeting the last night of the camp.  He said to me, “the testimony meeting lasted over 5 hours,… and I didn’t even fall asleep.”  He told me he cried through most of it, but his favorite testimony came from a young man with severe autism.  This young man stood with the microphone, and mumbled for quite a while, but at one point used the words Jesus Christ, and the Spirit in the room was indescribable.  250 young men witnessed a miracle, the Power of the Word of God in this young man’s life helped him utter the first 2 words anyone had ever been able to understand from him.  His dad wept at this, and shared his own testimony and expressed his extreme gratitude for the chance to understand, for the first time, 2 simple words from his child’s mouth.

Brothers and sisters, preparing for this talk was an awesome experience for me.  There is Power immeasurable in the Word of God.  It is my deepest desire, and most sincere hope that you have felt even just a portion of the Spirit that helped my poor mind compile these thoughts, and that it will lead you to seek the Power of the Word of God in your own lives, even just a little bit more.  I know that as I commit myself to spending more time feasting upon the words of Christ, the power of the Word of God will enlighten me, edify me, strengthen me, lift me up, bring me peace, and ultimately change my heart, and change my attitudes, and behavior.  It will do the same for you I testify, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

June 5, 2015  What a great day.   I got up at 5:00 AM, because I got to make 13 dozen + 4 cinnamon rolls for the missionaries.  I was on my feet from 5:45 AM until 2:00 PM.  They all turned out perfect.  All of the missionaries Loved them, but by the time I finished I wasn't sure if I ever wanted to see another cinnamon roll again.  Around 3:30 I ate my cinnamon roll and that was the first thing I had eaten all day.  Boy are my legs and back sore.

Our stake came up today.  They are staying in a different camp than ours, but we went down to see them.  It was so fun seeing all of our friends.  The kids as well as the leaders made us feel so good.  They invited us to have dinner with them so we did.

June 6, 2015  The weather is beautiful.  The sun is shinning with a cool breeze.  We have a youth conference in from Cedar City.  They have been fun to see and listen to.  Last night they had the woman from "Meet the Mormons" movie that talked about having two children out of wed lock.as their guest speaker.  The Balls and the Webbs went to hear her talk, but dad and I stayed home because I was hurting so much.  I slept great.

Dad's blood sugar dropped to 35 today and that wiped him out.  There is a mamma deer that comes into our camp everyday that is ready to have a baby anytime.  I can't wait to see the new fawn.

Looking forward to seeing Kim & family tonight, and Sean's, & Richy's families and Dennis tomorrow for Ethan's becoming a priest

I love you all tons.  Mom

June 3rd on the mountain

Today was awesome.  We have loved seeing the girls and hearing them have tons of fun.  Tonight I gave the "O Women of Faith"  presentation to the Vernal Ashley stake.  I cried while giving the presentation.  I could really feel the spirit.  Dad bore his testimony.  It was great.  There was lots of hugs and high 5 after the presentation.  It really made dad and I feel good.  The girls from the stake gave us a really cute flower pot with a bouquet of candy bars.  YUM!  They invited us to dinner so we joined them and loved being there.

June 2, 2015  We are home for P day.  I will be going to see Dr. Calton for my knee!  Boo!  I am a big coward.

I have been called to cook cinn. rolls for 156 missionaries this Friday!  We have been asking all of our kids here in Ogden & dad's sisters if we can borrow their cookie sheets, so I have enough to make all of the cinn. rolls.  Wish me luck.

We got girls as well as families.  What fun.  We put on our skit telling all of the rules.   Dad has to talk trash and is having a hard time.  He needs to get in the groove.  I tell about the wrist bands and then I put on a silly  moose hat while dad tells about the animals.  The other two couples are better at telling their rules.  When the buses came up to camp I got all choked up seeing all of the young women.  I just hope and pray that I can be an instrument in the Lord's hands in influencing some of the girls.  I want them to know that the Lord loves them.  When you go through the gates to the camp there is such a beautiful spirit, you can really feel the difference.  The camp is sacred grounds set apart for bringing the testimony of the Lord and His love for everyone that comes to the mountain.

We see tons of deer, chipmunks, ground squirrels daily and some rabbits, and moose each week.  It is so fun.  I am still in awe at the Lord's creation.  The camp has come to life with leaves and colors.

Church is wonderful.  The spirit is awesome.

I want you all to know that I know that the Lord lives and loves all of us.  We have the truth and it is our responsibility to share that knowledge with everyone we see on a daily bases.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-dad Saints is the Savior's church here on the earth.  It is a guideline for us to follow showing us how to return worthy to our Father.  I love you all more than words can tell.  I pray for you all several times a day.  Be happy and keep smiling.  Love you tons.  Mom

Every 1st & 3rd Sunday we have a pot luck dinner with all of the missionaries. It is a lot of fun. We have a get together on the 4th Saturday of the month. On that day we eat and then play games. This last Saturday we had Dutch Oven dinner and then played some very fun games. First game was wrapping two people in your district with toilet tissue. I was the one that was wrapped by the ladies in the district. The next game was hitting a ping pong ball with a carrot that was hanging from a rope. You would swing the carrot between your legs and try to hit the ball until it crossed the floor to its finish line. Dad & I were the couple that played the Rudolf game which was to put Vaseline on our nose and pick up red cotton balls with our nose run to the other end of the table and shake them off into a bowl. There was a ton a laughter going on in the room. On Friday last week we were invited to dinner at a place called Timber Lake Moose Lodge. It is a big lodge that has 13 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms. It can sleep 64 people. They supplied the meat and we brought salads, potatoes & desserts. Then the kids gave us a tour of the lodge. Very beautiful. Everyday we get the privilege of seeing Gods creations. Between the animals and the scenery it is so awesome. This last week was our first time of having campers that we were in charge of. We enjoyed them, but it was hard to get them to were they needed to be on TIME. Dad said it was like herding cats! They were to be at the lake at 2:45 PM so they could be on the water from 3:00 - 4:00 PM. However they were all finally there at 3:50 PM. Luckly the lake wasn't busy so they let them stay out for their hour. Normally that will not happen. That is one thing that the camp has to stick to following a schedule. So if you are late you will miss your time at the activity. Bye for now. We love you all tons. Mom

Tuesday, May 19, 2015

The time has flew by and I haven't taken the time to update the blog. We are leaving in 20 minutes so I will give you a brief update. For weeks we have been going to meetings and cleaning the camp. We have made some awesome friends. May 16th was a open house for the stake camp leaders to come and check out the sites. In the morning we went to the Welcome Center and had our flag ceremony. The wind was blowing. It was icy cold with some snow falling. I got so choked up when the Young women's colors were let down. It was so spiritual. Then we went to our camps and awaited the arrival of the leaders. We had at least 100 (could have been 200) leader come to our camp. We showed them around and answered questions from 12:00 - 4:50 PM in the freezing cold weather and wind. But that got us excited for the arrival of the campers. Dad and I went to dinner with 6 couples from the camp. Sunday was awesome. Dad taught the High Priest and I heard from tons of high priest that he did a fantastic job. He of course thought that he did OK, but all of the others felt the spirit and came away feeling uplifted. Monday we had a wonderful meeting about how to do the orientation for families, because the Webb's and dad & I will be doing our first orientation on Thursday and the Balls who are the only ones who know what they are doing in camp will be on their P-day. Cross your fingers that we do ok. While driving around after the meeting we saw 3 moose, and around 20 deer. I just love seeing all of the animals. Love you all tons. Miss all of you. Mom

Weight Tracking 5/12/2015

I missed a couple weeks so I'll give a quick run down.

Week of 4/27/2015 I was down to 369.2
Week of 5/5/2015 I was up to 371.0
Week of 5/12/2015 down to 368.4

So a little bit of a set back last week but back down today.  All told in the last 5 months I am down 33 pounds.  My Fitness Pal is only listing it as 16.6 pounds since I didn't track any weight at all last year and 387.8 is the last weight I had entered at some point 2 years ago(or more).  I still haven't started any kind of exercise regimen it has all been diet.  I do find I am getting hungry a lot lately. Maybe I need to start exercising and increasing my caloric intake.  I was hoping to get down to about 350 before I started exercising in earnest but I will have to look at it as time goes on.

Mom & Dad's Mission Log: May 5, 2015

We had to come home once again so I could post for the last week at camp. The week started off good. We went to the SL Temple as a mission, then to eat at Joseph Smith Bldg. It was good, great!!!!!

Thursday we started cleaning and meeting with our other camp hosts. Friday we cleaned some more cabins and had more meetings. Saturday we cleaned some more cabins and had more meetings. Sunday we had 3 wonderful meetings at church. The spirit was so strong. I cooked a pork roast, potatoes, carrots & onion in the crock pot. Boy was it good! I also made cinn. rolls and took them around to some of the missionaries close to our trailer.

This is the story of last Sunday which was "terrible" (see last week's post): We ran out of propane so dad ran to Walmart and purchased a bottle of propane and a couple of electric heaters. He hooked up the propane, came in plugged in the heater and sat down and put his feet up. The propane sensor started blaring over and over and over, so dad went out and shut the propane off. We thought that would stop the blaring, but it didn't. Dad had also turned the hot water heater switch to electricity. Then the breaker flipped and we had no power in the trailer. Dad's recliner was up so I helped him climb out and he went back out side and flipped the breaker. The sensor was still blaring and we were shocked. What could we do. We couldn't sleep through that noise. Dad had a smart! thought. He had also bought an electric heater and plugged it in to help heat up the trailer. It was the fumes from burning off what they put on the heater bars that were causing the sensor to go crazy. When dad sat down in his chair he put the foot stool part down and broke his computer. Needless to say Sunday night was not good.

Monday we cleaned some more cabins and had more meetings. Tuesday we went to a meeting and cleaned some more cabins. Then we got ready and left for P-day. On the way out of the camp we stopped in at the office and picked up dad's new computer. We stopped and bought a new printer on the way home. Tomorrow will be fun getting dad's new toys up and working. I will be doing the wash and shopping for food to last the next week. I love you all. Thank you for being the best family ever. Mom

Mom & Dad's Mission Log April 29, 2015

We have had a wonderful time so far on our mission. Here are a few highlights of the week of training.

Tuesday the 21st: First speaker was the stake president. He told us to remember the 3 L's Listen to the spirit, Log it (write it down) and Live it (go forth and do what the Lord ask you to do). Offer your whole sole to the Lord. Come to the mountain to be healed (teach, preach, testify & heal).

Next speaker was Sister Greenouch. Heavenly Father is guiding someone to camp for you to touch. Crank it up a notch- to make a difference..

Next speaker was Bro. Whimpy. Who am I, & How did I get here? Life goes by fast. He told how Zion's camp was to help the Lord test and prove His chosen apostles. 9 of the 12 men chosen to be apostles were in Zions Camp. He showed a video how Brigham Young was converted by a simple testimony being born.

Next was Bro. Riddle spoke on Listen, log & live as the Holy Ghost teaches you. When thou art converted strengthen thy brother. You will succeed as you learn to receive by the spirit. Divine aid can be ours everyday.

Pres. Brown asked are you Sheep herders or shepherds? He told a story about a bully who was 5 yrs old who stood in front of the steps to go up a slide and wouldn't let anyone go up them. while everyone was afraid of the boy who was large for his age his 3 yr old went up to him and HUGGED him. The bully's heart melted and allowed the other kids to use the slide. Then he told a story about him and his son being in a car driving when his wife speed past them. He was shocked and started to try to catch up to her and their green Cambry. His son told his dad "That isn't mom" But he was certain it was. And decided to teach his son a lesson on humility and prove that he was right. He started to drive recklessly in order to catch up. After a long time he finally caught up to the green Cambry and to his surprise his son was right. He asked "How did you know that wasn't your mom?" His son's reply was, "Because we are in the Green Cambry".

Next was Bro. Randall of the 70. Teach with the Spirit. Make this a full time mission and a branch. D&C 56:17 There is a pattern in all things. Rather than Quarenteen them Immunize. them so they know what to do. He old a story about a little girl who was in a plane crash whose name was Sailor. Everyone on board was killed but her. She was hurt and it was starting to get cold and dark, so she started to walk. She got to the top of a hill and saw a light in the distance. That gave her hope and she walked to the light. She was saved and her family and the others were found because of her courage and faith. Help others to begin to believe. We need to focusing on the lost, less active etc. It is easier to keep them active than to reactivate. teach to deepen testimonies. by 1. How to keep Sabbath holy at church. 2. How to keep Sabbath holy at home.

Wed. 22nd Carry pink cards always. Young Women's theme & Mission of the camp. Then we separated into learning about the different positions (callings) at the camp. Because of weather problems the schedule was being changed.

Thursday 23rd more classes on positions up at camp. At 3:00 pm we all went into the chapel and were told where we would be serving. Elder & Sister Holliday are camp host at the Reeder camp. then we along with all of the other camp host were moved to the mountain.

Friday 24th Elder Holliday left at 7:30 AM to help move other missionaries to the mountain. Then he worked on getting everyone hooked up to the sewer, water and electricity. Hooray! we have water and sewer! Elder Holliday and I covered our 50' hose with insalation. It snowed on us 3 times today. I hung the family picture. Hooray!

Saturday 25th It snowed all day. Elder Holliday was gone most of the day helping hook up the last of the missionaries.

Sunday 26st Church was wonderful. The rest of the day was terrible.

Monday 27th We went to meetings all day for Camp Host only. Being trained on our duties as camp host. Elder Holliday is converted to being a camp host. We are watchmen. Be the handle on the door, not the lock. Be open - listen to other's ideas and work together. D&C 88:119 organize yourselves. Get expandable folders, get to know your camp. P-day started at 5:00 PM so we headed home. Spent the evening with Rich, Kari and kids, Den, and Jared, Holly & kids. It was so much fun.

Tuesday 28th. Elder Holliday and I did some shopping for things we need for camp host. We packed the truck so we can leave early tomorrow morning for the Salt Lake Temple. All of the missionaries are going to the temple tomorrow, then to lunch at the Joseph Smith memorial building, then back to camp.

I want you all to know that I love you all very much. Be Happy :) be healthy :) and remember that you are loved. It is late and I need to go for now. Love Mom Holliday

Spencer Holliday Announces His Candidacy for President of the United States

This is actually Sean, not Heather.  Apparently I am not allowed to post to the family blog, but I have my ways...

A couple of months ago, Spencer was asked to give a speech at the annual (?) Franklin Covey Leader in Me symposium.  The Leader in Me program is a Franklin Covey initiative to teach leadership in schools.  The kids' school (Ogden Preparatory Academy) got involved with the program last year and is having very positive results. The symposium was meant to showcase the program and share experiences to a collection of teachers, school administrators, and public officials from around the country/western states.  Of course we got this information from Spencer, so we were never 100% sure what the event was or which topic exactly he was supposed to address.  We decided to go generic and prepare a speech on leadership.  Spencer provided the content and Heather and I helped him put it into words.

That was Monday evening.  On Wednesday, we went to the symposium.  Spencer was one of 12 (?) kids (ranging from 3rd to 9th grade) to address the conference and then participate in a panel discussion.  After the the panel discussion, all the kids except Spencer left the stage.  Spencer was had been stopped by a lady who wanted a copy of his speech so she could quote him, and who---we later found out---was Justice Nancy Saitta of the Nevada supreme court.

A few weeks later, Ogden Prep hosted a similar event for local officials (city, county, and state) where they had students speak, toured classrooms and had a panel discussion.  As the student body president, Spencer was the MC.  He also gave his speech on leadership again.

Based on that event, he was invited to speak at today's county commissioner meeting.

Here is a link to the video.  They refer to Spencer occasionally throughout the meeting, but unless you're really interested in county government I'd just watch the introduction, speech, and follow-up which run from minute 16 to minute 23.

Enjoy!

Weight tracking(4/21/2015) and fun

Well not much to report on the weight loss front.  I weighed in at 370.8 this morning.

The fun is that the Barry Manilow concert last night was amazing.

Weight loss for 4/14/2015

So as of this morning I am down just over 30 pounds.  371.2 and only hating the diet sometimes.

Thursday, April 9, 2015

Well it's been almost two years since I tried posting my health goals on the blog.  They did not end up going too well.  I did walk a fair bit but I didn't really keep things up dated and then I ended up hurting my knee playing laser tag and stopped walking.  I then gained a lot of weight.  Over the year and a half until January I ended up at 401.4 lbs when Kim was starting the weight loss challenge.  The challenge ended up not going anywhere but I had decided to get my weight in check and so I started to tracking my food and using myfitnesspal.com(and the app).

So far I have lost 27.4 lbs (374.0 on Tuesday).  I'm feeling well and I am a lot happier with where things are heading.  I weigh myself every Tuesday and I'm going to try to post on the blog that day as well with my progress.  If any of you want to use myfitnesspal as well my name is blessedexchequer and you can send me a friend request.

I have also started some light exercise and will start walking again as the weather improves.

The start of our mission

The day of our setting apart was a miserable one for me. I woke up with stomach flu. I spent the day in the bathroom. It has been years since I have had this kind of sickness. Just before leaving for the church I called Kim and Dave and asked them to say a prayer for me to be able to keep control over my stomach and bottom, then I asked Dad and Dennis to give me a blessing. When the blessing was over I ran for the bathroom. But the blessing worked and I had control until the setting apart for both Dad & I was over. Then it was back to the bathroom. Bishop Hadley took all of the family that was here to a large room. He asked the grandchildren some questions about why we were here. Then he asked Richy how our mission was going to affect him, next he asked Kari, Dennis, Sean and Heather the same question. They talked about how this mission was a perfect fit for dad and I, how we loved teenagers and they loved us. How we would have the opportunity share our testimony more than we did on our first mission and how we would influence more people this time too. Sean mentioned our helping to shape future mothers on the gospel and rearing children. I went first for the setting apart. The thing that I remember most about my blessing was that I knew it came from God. Things were mentioned in my blessing that were concerns for me that only the Lord knew and He answered them through Bishop Hadley. One thing of concern was my knee and back. He blessed me that they would not be a problem. I have been concerned about not being able to help in what we were called to do, but he assured me that I would be able to fulfill my calling. I had not gained a testimony that this was the mission that the Lord wanted us to go to. I wanted to turn in our papers and go where ever the Lord called us. To put faith in the Lord that He would call us somewhere that He needed us to go and that we would be able to afford. My blessing told me to have faith that this is where the Lord wanted us to go. I knew that dad had a strong testimony about going to this mission, but I had not been convert until last night. Then dad was set apart. The one thing that I remember about dad's blessing is that he would be a great influence on the girls threw his story telling. He was also blessed that he would not have any health issues. In dad's blessing he was told that this was the mission that the Lord wanted us to go on. That dad had been led by the spirit. I am so blessed to be married to such a wonderful man who hears and listens to the spirit. I have no more worries. I know that we are meant to go to the Heber Valley Camp. I know that the Lord needs us there. I know that we will be able to help and strengthen many young girls while serving there. And I know that we will be able to influence more than the girls. Our blessings mentioned influencing young men, priesthood holders, leaders etc. I want to be an instrument in the Lords hand to strengthen testimonies and to let everyone know that they are loved by the Lord and Heavenly Father. I want all of my children, children in love and grandchildren to know that I love each and everyone of you with all of my heart. I will miss you all dearly. Be safe, be happy and know that you are loved. Mom Holliday

Thanksgiving and business

I just wanted to say that I'm thankful to be part of this spectacular family.  You are all such a blessing to me!  Thanksgiving has always been a favorite of mine, but in recent years its been less so because I don't get to spend it with you all.  This year I was really focused on how much I love my family and how thankful I am for all of you.  I can be thankful for you, even if I can't be there to celebrate with you!

I hope your holiday was full of gratitude and love!

Book Club announcement: Let's do it!  I'll choose the first month.  The book will be The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.  We can discuss even discuss it in person (for the most part) at the end of the month, since I will be in Utah!

General Conference announcement: I, for one, am going to be sharing a tidbit from conference now and again.  I really think it will be fun if you do the same!

Today I wanted to mention President Packer's talk.  I usually have a hard time listening to him speak. I tend to lose focus, but when I read this one I just loved it!  Here is the link, you should definitely read the whole thing!  I feel blessed that we were raised in a gospel centered home by loving parents who helped provide an atmosphere where we could each develop our own personal testimonies.  Here are some quotes from Pres. Packer...

The scriptures hold the keys to spiritual protection. They contain the doctrine and laws and ordinances that will bring each child of God to a testimony of Jesus Christ as the Savior and Redeemer.

I have felt the scriptures bless my life a lot lately.  And I've needed the spiritual protection they hold.  Depression is a real thing in my life, Satan knows that I get discouraged easily, but the scriptures are a great protection against his powers.  And I love what he says following this paragraph, a story about  a member of the Seventy that taught him about reading the scriptures.

If you are set on a course of faith and activity in the Church, stay on course and keep your covenants. Continue forward until the time when the Lord’s blessings will come to you and the Holy Ghost will be revealed as a moving force in your life.
If you are presently on a course that points away from the one outlined in the scriptures, let me assure you there is a way back.
Jesus Christ has prescribed a very clear method for us to repent and find healing in our lives. The cure for most mistakes can be found by seeking forgiveness through personal prayer.
These words are just comforting to me.  None of us is perfect and we each need repentance to be clean.

The gospel teaches us to be happy, to have faith rather than fear, to find hope and overcome despair, to leave darkness and turn toward the light of the everlasting gospel.
I love the gospel.  It is perfect, even though none of us are.  Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ prepared a way for us to be happy and they want that for us!  Doesn't that just amok you feel hopeful, that the Creator of the world is in your corner, cheering you on?  It does me.

I bear certain witness of the scriptures as a key to our spiritual protection. I also bear witness of the healing power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, “that through him all might be saved”12 who will be saved. The Lord’s Church has been established on the earth once again. Of the truthfulness of the gospel I bear witness. Of Him I am a witness. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Amen.  :-)

Meeting

Hey.  So, I've been thinking.  I like you guys.  You're all pretty darn cool.  I'd like to "do" more stuff together.  You know?  I would like to see if you guys are interested in doing some stuff together.  Here are my ideas, please share your own as well.

  • Book Club: Wouldn't it be fun to have a book club together?  A friend of mine here does this with her kids who are all over the country.  They read a book together each month and then get together via g+ or something to discuss it.  I think it would be great fun.  Each month one of us would choose the book for the rest of us to read. That way, we are broadening our horizons and trying new things, but we know we'll get to read something we want at least every so often. :)  I think it would be fun, what do you think?
  • General Conference discussion: Ethan and I are trying to discuss a new talk from the most recent GC each week.  I know we are having a difficult time posting on this blog as frequently as some of us would like, but what if we just shared a thought or two from a talk that inspired us?  That way we can be helping ourselves by reading or listening to the talks throughout the next 5 months and helping each other by reminding us of something that might help us as well.
  • If you got my text today, you know my proposal for a family meeting on g+ tonight.  Maybe it will be a way for us to communicate all together and actually get something decided on.  It might be a good idea to use this tool more frequently.
  • And finally, I am going to add all of us to the email list so when one person posts something on this blog everyone will get it in their inbox.  In order to comment you will still have to click over to the blog, but this way you will be aware of what is being shared.

Mom's retirement

I just copy and pasted this from my blog, but figured it would be good to have on here as well!  Love you all like crazy!
..............................................................
For weeks I worked on planning a surprise party to celebrate my mom's retirement.  And then we found out that Ethan's promotion was going to be the same week as her retirement... it was a bit crazy, but it all worked out.

The invitations went out and the RSVPs came in.  We expected a crowd somewhere around 70 people! I used celebrations.com because I could design my own invitation and they sent it out with all the ease of an evite rsvp.  It was great. I highly recommend using them!  This was the invitation I designed.

We were going to be feeding the masses a light dinner and dessert, so I had to come up with a fun way to decorate the tables.  I wanted to honor all my mom's talents, so I decided to do each table with a different theme.  The themes were based on some things that she'll have more time for now that she's retired. So there was a mission table... it had a globe, a Book of Mormon, and this banner...

A travel table, which included this sign and a picture of their new trailer...

Sadly, I had no time at all for taking pictures of the tables and the event... but there was also a quilting table, a knitting table, a painting table, and a couple others I can't remember right now. (I can't believe I can't remember it occupied my thoughts for so long!!!)

The guests started arriving and I was so excited to see so many people that loved my mom and that I knew she loved.

And then we waited... my dad texted and said they were leaving their house, so we expected them and everyone gathered together and waited with baited breath... but they took forever to get there... then they finally arrived and we knew we had succeeded in the surprise!

I had so much help with the food! Richy came and helped prep food and my sister in law Brindy (who is my SIL on Ethan's side, not mine!) came and saved the day as well.  She and Sara (another Woody SIL) provided most of the serving dishes.  The dinner table looked fabulous!

And then my fabulous sister-in-law Heather took the dessert table on herself.  It was beyond words amazing.  Everyone was in awe of her skills (as was I) she is super woman.

Once everyone had food and had a chance to visit for a minute, I let everyone know that the cards on their tables were for them to write on and we would read them throughout the night... it was funny, but SO much funnier when my brother, Sean, took over reading them.  He made the night so much fun.

We had a little program that was really neat to honor her.  I rewrote some words to Sunrise, Sunset and played and sang it.  It was silly.  Next Richy's two oldest kids performed a skit.  I had planned several games, one was a trivia face off game, another was a list of things she either did or didn't do and people had to race to a buzzer when I got to one that was real, and the last was a timeline game where people had to put things in chronological order (when she started different crafting and when she lived in different places).  My dad talked about what a neat lady my mom is and how blessed he is to have her and Sean read two really beautiful poems that he wrote for my mom and my dad.  And we ended the night by singing You Are My Sunshine to her, like she used to always sing to us.

It was a super fun night and such a special way to celebrate what a wonderful life she's lived so far.  We're excited for all the great things she gets to do now that she's retired!

I can not believe that I only have 3 measly pictures from the whole night, all these other are files from my computer in prep for the party.  Heather and Kari send me what you have when you can!!!

Labor Day pictures

Hey everybody.  We had so much fun in Preston with y'all!  It has been far too long, but we won't have to miss it again for awhile! Yay!  I took a lot of pictures, but my computer is being lame and so they aren't in any chronological order.  I don't feel like taking the time to fix it, so random pictures of Labor Day weekend are below.  Thanks again for making it such a spectacular weekend for us!  We love you!
